Expectations VS Reality

In Freelancing

Rather than being employed by a single company or organization, freelancers offer their services to clients on a project-by-project or contract basis. Freelancers, also known as independent contractors, work in various fields, such as writing, graphic design, software development, marketing, accounting, and more. The rise of freelancing can be attributed to several factors, including technological advances that make remote work possible, changes in the global economy and labor market, and a desire for greater flexibility and autonomy in one's work.

You can work as a freelancer from anywhere, anytime, provided you can access the internet. In addition to working from home, freelancers can work in coffee shops, co-working spaces, or even while traveling. Also, freelancers can choose their clients and projects, allowing them to pursue work that aligns with their interests and skills.

However, freelancing also comes with its own set of challenges. As independent contractors, freelancers are responsible for finding their clients, managing their finances, and handling all aspects of their business. This can be incredibly challenging for those new to freelancing or wanting more business experience.

Another challenge for freelancers is the need to market themselves constantly and stay relevant in their field. There is increased competition for jobs due to the introduction of online marketplaces and platforms for freelance work, and freelancers must work hard to distinguish themselves from their competitors and establish a strong reputation.

Despite these challenges, freelancing continues to grow in popularity as a viable and flexible career option. For many, the ability to work on their terms and pursue work they are passionate about outweighs the challenges and uncertainties of freelancing. Over the last few years, people have started working as freelancers and on their schedules. Being your boss, working from home, and having a flexible schedule can be very appealing. However, many things could be improved about what freelancing is really like.

Expectations VS Reality

In this blog, we'll explore some expectations vs. reality of freelancing.

  1. Expectation: You'll have complete control over your schedule.
Reality: While freelancing can offer more flexibility than a traditional 9-5 job, you still have deadlines to meet and clients to please. You may work long hours, including evenings and weekends, to complete everything.

  2. Expectation: You'll be able to work from anywhere.

Reality: While it's true that freelancers can work from anywhere with an internet connection, it's only sometimes practical or comfortable. Working from home can be isolating, and finding a quiet and productive workspace in public places like coffee shops can be challenging.

  3. Expectation: You'll make more money freelancing than in a traditional job.

Reality: Freelancers often charge higher rates than traditional employees, but they also have to pay for their own health insurance, retirement savings, and other expenses typically covered by an employer. Additionally, freelancers may need a consistent stream of work or income.

  1. Expectation: You'll have more creative control over your work

Reality: While freelancers may have more autonomy than traditional employees, they still must meet their client's expectations and adhere to their brand guidelines. This can limit the amount of creative freedom they have.

  2. Expectation: You'll have more free time

Reality: Freelancers often have to hustle to find new clients and projects, which can be time-consuming. Additionally, since they're responsible for their finances, they may have to spend time on administrative tasks like bookkeeping and invoicing.

  3. Expectation: You'll be able to set your rates

Reality: While freelancers can set their rates, they must also be competitive to win clients. Additionally, they may have to negotiate their rates with clients, which can be uncomfortable.

In conclusion, freelancing can be an excellent option for those who want more flexibility and control over their work. Nevertheless, it would be best if you gained a realistic understanding of what freelancing entails. While it can offer more autonomy and creative freedom, it also comes with challenges and responsibilities. You can decide whether freelancing is right for you by being aware of these expectations vs. reality.
